We talk a lot about periods at Saalt, and they are worth talking about, yes! But did you know that your body does more than have a period every month? Your body is actually always in what is called the “menstrual cycle”. We think it is important you have as much information on each phase of the cycle because in order for you to know what you need, you should know what your body is doing.
The menstrual cycle is made up of four phases
-
The Menstrual phase (the period)
-
The Follicular phase (the pre ovulation phase)
-
The Ovulation phase (the phase where the body releases the egg)
-
The Luteal phase (the post ovulation/pre-period phase)
Each phase of the menstrual cycle plays a unique and important role for your body. How you feel can drastically change in each phase because your hormone levels are changing in each phase. This is normal, and it is simply your body telling you what it needs.
Let’s dive in!
The first phase of the menstrual cycle is the one that most are familiar with, the menstrual phase. It takes place during your days of bleeding. A period can range from 3-7 days depending on your unique anatomy. During this phase, your body may feel:
-
Fatigued
-
Abdominal cramping
-
Mood swings
-
Tender breasts
-
Bloating
-
Trouble sleeping
These symptoms are not abnormal, and it’s just your body telling you it is okay to slow down and find rest during this phase. Saalt is here to make sure you can live your best life during the menstrual phase of your cycle. The second phase is called the Follicular Phase. In this phase your body is preparing for ovulation. Your energy is back! You may notice the following changes in your body.
-
Your emotions and feelings begin to stabilize
-
You may notice you have better concentration
-
You may even feel more social
-
Reduced cravings
Hit the tennis courts, go mountain biking, try a new workout class, or take on that new project at work! You are ready to show up with your full self, so use this phase to your advantage and get out there.
The third phase is known as the ovulation phase. This is when the egg is released from the ovary, travels through the fallopian tube to be fertilized. It is the shortest phase of the menstrual cycle and lasts between 1-3 days. Much like the Follicular Phase, your mood and energy will most likely remain high and stable throughout this phase. It is not uncommon that this phase displays a few of the following symptoms:
-
Ovulation spotting
-
Thicker cervical discharge
-
Ovulation cramping or discomfort
Since this phase could bring the unexpected, mid-cycle bleed or heavier discharge, we encourage you to throw on a pair of our Light Absorbency Saalt Wear like our Leakproof Thong or our Leakproof Lace Hipster for backup protection!
The final and longest phase of the menstrual cycle is the Luteal Phase. It normally lasts between 11-18 days and is your body preparing to have a period. During your Luteal Phase, it is not uncommon to experience symptoms like:
-
Mood swings
-
Headaches
-
Fatigue
-
Back pain
-
Acne
-
Decrease in energy and concentration levels
During this phase your hormones are shifting from high levels of estrogen to a rising level of progesterone. This change in hormone levels can cause the symptoms associated with PMS (Premenstrual Syndrome). PMS is a normal condition that affects most people who have a period. PMS is simply your body telling you it is preparing to have a period!
Use this phase to your advantage and slow down. Snuggle up with your favorite book, move your body in lower-cardio workouts like yoga or walking and fuel your body with healthy, whole foods.
Every phase of your cycle plays an important role in your overall menstrual cycle. The more you know about your cycle, the better you can support what your body needs during its different phases. Saalt is here to help you live your best life in every phase of your cycle! So check your backside in the mirror one last time and go live your life.
