Zodiac Signs As Period Symptoms

Zodiac Signs As Period Symptoms

Periods can be a time of self-care and celebration, but they can also bring some less-than-ideal symptoms along with them. Want to unlock the mystery of that time of the month? Here’s how we view the signs and their symptoms.

Aries

  • Headaches - Aries can be hard-headed, so period symptoms like to hit ‘em where it hurts. Lower estrogen levels during the period can cause headaches, so you’re not alone if you experience them. Period headaches can range from a dull throbbing to a full-blown migraine. Either way, they’re no fun. Get some rest, take an over-the-counter pain reliever, and be sure to stay hydrated to help with these symptoms(1).

Taurus

  • Food Cravings - Taureans are known to enjoy the finer things in life, so those period food cravings can be the perfect excuse to go all-out on chocolate, ice cream, and potato chips. These cravings are caused by decreases in estrogen and progesterone. It’s perfectly normal to have cravings, so who are you to deny your body want it wants? Dark chocolate has antioxidants and minerals, so it’s a health food, right? (2)

Gemini

  • Anxiety - Geminis are typically confident and social, so when period anxiety hits, it can really take a toll. This is a common result of a decrease in estradiol and progesterone. Getting some exercise, managing stress, and cutting back on the caffeine can help manage period anxiety. And remember, it’s okay to say no to plans if you’re not feeling up to it, Gemini. You’re the life of the party, but the show will still go on! (3)

Cancer

  • Crying Spells - Cancers are kind and sensitive, but this can be turned up a few notches while menstruating. Lower estrogen and progesterone levels can cause a decrease in serotonin, which may lead to crying spells. This can affect up to 75% of people who menstruate. Doing some light exercise or practicing mindfulness can help (4). Or if you need to just let it out, go ahead and watch that one commercial, we won’t tell.

Leo

  • Cramps - Leos are known to be a little extra in a good way, but you know what’s extra in a bad way? Period cramps. Cramping is caused when your uterus contracts to expel its lining. Cramping can often be lessened with a heating pad and some over-the-counter pain relievers so you can get back to being your extra-in-a-good-way self, Leo (5)

Virgo

  • Acne - Virgos are all about routines and chances are you have the most regimented skincare routine, so why are you breaking out before your period?! Drops in estrogen and progesterone around menstruation can cause your sebaceous glands to produce more sebum, which leads to acne. Hormonal acne is especially common around the chin and jaw. Over-the-counter acne cleansers can help, but you may also want limit your sugar intake to prevent breakouts (6).

Libra

  • Mood Swings - Librans are typically all about balance, but when our hormones get out of whack, so can our moods. You may go from feeling cool and calm to feeling irritable and angry without much warning. If this sounds like you, be sure to get at least 7 hours of sleep, move your body, and try stress-reducing activities such as yoga or meditation. You’ll find your balance again in no time, Libra! (7)

Scorpio

  • Increased libido - Scorpios can be known to embrace their sensuality, so it only makes sense that they would experience an increased libido during menstruation. This can be caused by estrogen levels rising during the later part of your period, and is perfectly normal. In fact, orgasms can help with period cramps and stress relief, so it may be a good idea to listen to your body and get it on! (8)

Sagittarius

  • Fatigue - Sagittarians are known for their up-for-anything attitudes, so period fatigue can feel pretty uncharacteristic. Fatigue during the period can be caused by sleep disruptions or from hormonal changes. You may feel a little sleepy or just completely run down. Eating balanced meals, getting regular aerobic exercise, and staying hydrated can help keep you going when that period fatigue hits (10).

Capricorn

  • Brain Fog - Capricorns typically know exactly what they want, so period-induced brain fog can be quite frustrating for them. Hormones play a large role in how we think, so when hormone levels change, it common to feel a little out-of-it. This may manifest as trouble with memory or concentration. Getting good sleep, eating a healthy diet, and getting regular exercise can help you get back on track, Capricorn (10).

Aquarius

  • Hot Flashes - Aquarians are typically cool and collected, that is until period hot flashes hit. Low estrogen can cause your brain to release more norepinephrine, which may make you more sensitive to temperature changes. When hot flashes hit, a cool wet rag around the neck can help regulate your body temperate. And as always, staying hydrated and maintaining a healthy diet can help prevent hot flashes and other uncomfortable symptoms (11).

Pisces

  • Bloating - Pisces are a water sign, and bloating can occur when lower progesterone levels cause us to hold onto water. This is typically worse at the beginning of your period. Limiting sodium intake and eating more potassium-rich foods can help prevent bloating. It may sound counter-intuitive, but it’s also a great idea to ensure you’re drinking plenty of water! (12)

Please note, these symptoms can affect anyone, regardless of their sign! While these symptoms are all common, they can sometimes be signs of an underlying condition such as PMS or PMDD. If you have any concerns about your period symptoms, please talk to your doctor.
