Ask the Saalt Coaches: How Do You Wash a Cup or Disc While Traveling?

"Hi Saalt Coaches,

As I get ready for holiday travels, I wanted to ask for your advice on how to clean my menstrual cup while on the go. My cycle is due to start while I’m away from home for the first time since using a Saalt Cup. Any tips or portable solutions you can recommend for public restrooms and cleaning away from home? I don’t have tons of room in my carry-on, so I'm hoping for a small, easy, and discreet solution! SOS!

Thanks so much!

From,

Stressed & Saalty"

As fellow period cup and disc users here at Saalt, we totally understand how intimidating it can be to need to use your cup or disc for the first time while away from your home. Maybe you’ll need to remove and clean your menstrual disc or cup on the plane, in an airport bathroom, or at your great aunt’s house in the middle of dinner. But, we have plenty of tips and ticks to make this a breeze. So while we can’t say there won’t be stress this holiday season, we can at least guarantee that there won’t be any period clean-up stress for you this holiday season.  😉

No sink, No Problem

If you need to clean your menstrual cup in a stall without access to a sink, then we recommend having our Travel Kit on hand. This handy kit comes with a squeeze bottle that you can fill with water beforehand to use to spay and rinse your disc or cup over the toilet. Just remove your cup as normal, then empty as much as you can out of the cup directly into the toilet. Then pop your cup in your expanded compact sanitizer and wash with your Saalt Wash and rinse with your squeeze bottle until clean so that it collects in the sanitizer. Dump the water down the toilet when you are done, then reinsert your squeaky-clean cup.

Then, all your accessories can be stored in our handy wet bag, so no worries about dampness leaking into your purse or suitcase. Just be sure to remove and clean your accessories once you have the chance to and let them dry before storing.

Water-Free Cleaning on the Go

In a pinch, you can use our Saalt Wipes to clean your reusable menstrual disc or cup after removing and emptying its contents in the toilet. Just wipe down your disc or cup with a wipe or two and reinsert your cup when finished.

These wipes are gentle and safe to use on the silicone of the cup, along with your skin. So, they are perfect for a little personal clean up too. Added bonus, these wipes are fully biodegradable and can be flushed for extra easy use. This is our favorite option for a tight quarters plane bathroom cup cleaning.

Subtle Sanitizing

If you reach the end of your cycle while out traveling, or if you need to give your cup an extra-deep cleaning after an accidental drop or plunge, then don’t panic. There are a few easy sanitizing options that don’t require needing to give your cup a public boil in the kitchen or taking up precious shoe space in your carry-on bag for your beloved Saalt Steamer.

First, you can bring alcohol swabs or wipes with you to wipe down your cup after cleaning to sanitize it before storing it for your next cycle. Just fully wipe your cup from top to bottom, inside and outside, and let it air dry. Once dry, pop it back in its storage bag until you need it next.

Or, if you have access to a microwave or boiling water, then you can also sanitize your reusable menstrual cup or disc using your compact sanitizer. The Saalt Compact Sanitizer allows you to sanitize your menstrual cup or disc anywhere. Just boil water, pour over your cup or disc in the compact sanitizer until it's fully submerged, and then place the lid on, wait 3 minutes, and go. Or fill with water, add your cup/disc and be sure it's fully submerged, and place directly in the microwave for about 3 minutes (or whenever the water boils). Ta-da!

Extra Period Peace of Mind

Finally, we’d also love to share one of our favorite on-the-go period tips for extra peace of mind: pairing your cup or disc with a pair of Saalt Wear Period Underwear. In case you have any stray leaks or accidental overflows, these super-absorbent yet super-comfortable leakproof panties provide you with an extra layer of protection. Because sometimes you can’t get to the bathroom right away with long airport lines, long-haul road trips, or ‘seat-belt on’ signs getting in the way, but you still deserve the very best from your period care. The best part, you can still wear your fave leggings with our super-stretchy, VPL-banishing Seamless Collection of period panties.

Traveling with your menstrual cup or disc doesn’t have to be stressful or messy. With the right tools and a little preparation, you can easily manage your period on the go. Whether it’s using our Travel Kit for subtle, easy cleaning, relying on Saalt Wipes for a quick refresh, or sanitizing your cup with the Compact Sanitizer, there’s always a solution that fits your needs. Plus, pairing your cup or disc with leakproof underwear gives you added peace of mind, ensuring you stay leak-free no matter where you are. So, don’t let your period slow you down this holiday season—travel confidently, knowing that you’ve got everything you need to stay comfortable and stress-free. Safe travels, and happy period care!
