Can You Cut Your Menstrual Cup Stem?

Can You Cut Your Menstrual Cup Stem?

You just got your Saalt menstrual cup (yay!), you love it, the size is perfect for your anatomy, but the stem is causing a slight discomfort. Don’t worry, you have options. Everyone’s anatomy is uniquely different. For some period cup users, the stem is fully within the vaginal canal, and for others the stem is partially or fully sticking out of the vagina and labia; all scenarios are perfectly normal. If you find your stem is hanging down more than you’d like or causing you discomfort, just know you can cut the stem on your period cup.

What is the Stem on Your Period Cup For?

Not to get confused with a pull tab, the stem on menstrual cups is designed to help locate the cup in order to break the seal at the base of the cup, but not everyone needs the stem to help locate their cup (it sure is a nice feature though!). For many people, their cervix changes position throughout their cycle and you may find that having the stem is helpful in locating your cup. We recommend getting comfortable with the positioning and removal of your cup first, but if you decide after that to cut the stem of your period cup, here is a step-by-step how to:

  1. Clean cup : Before doing anything with your cup we always recommend cleaning your cup thoroughly. We recommend using a gentle, fragrance-free, oil-free, pH-balanced soap like our Saalt Wash.
  2. Try your period cup: The stem on your Saalt cup has three indents. Once you’ve placed your cup comfortably, use the indents to help you determine where you’d like to cut your stem. (Wear your cup for a couple cycles before deciding whether to cut your stem or not. Water-based lubricant on the base and stem of your cup can be helpful if you find any irritation from the stem of the cup while you determine your perfect length.)
  3. Remove your cup: This may seem obvious, but please do not attempt to cut the stem of your cup while it is inserted. Removing it makes for an easier (and safer) process.
  4. Clean cup: This may seem repetitive, but it’s only because we care about hygiene safety.
  5. Cut your stem: Using (clean) scissors, round out the edges so that it doesn’t poke you. This can be accomplished with your scissors or a (clean) nail file.
  6. Sanitize your cup: Before re-insertion, cutting, and after, we always recommend making sure your cup is sanitized so that it doesn’t harbor any bacteria.
  7. Enjoy a comfortable period: Voilâ! You now have the perfect fit for your Saalt cup and can relax knowing you have up to 12 hours of protection.

We say this all the time, but it’s true; everyone’s anatomy is different and while the stem may work for some, it may not for others. Having the option to cut your stem allows for a more custom menstrual product and comfortable period.
