In the aftermath of Hurricane Helene, the spirit of resilience and solidarity shines brightly in Western North Carolina. Saalt learned that many people were left isolated and in dire need. After the storm, a remarkable initiative came to fruition, demonstrating the profound impact of compassionate action and the critical importance of menstrual health.
A Call to Action
When the hurricane ravaged the region, community members were eager to help those affected. Saalt Cup user, Sarah Porter, contacted Saalt’s Impact Team, "Saalt Gives," looking for donations for those impacted by the hurricane. Her deep connection to the community and determination to make a difference played a pivotal role in Saalt’s contribution toward mobilizing relief efforts.
A Generous Donation
In response to Sarah’s heartfelt plea, Saalt responded with a contribution of 1,800 units of Saalt Wear period underwear. This donation goes beyond practical support; it symbolizes a commitment to dignity and care for individuals during challenging times. Access to menstrual hygiene and incontinence products is essential, particularly for those facing disruptions to their daily lives.
Collaborating for Relief
The strength of this initiative is amplified through collaboration. Sarah connected Saalt employees with a local woman-led organization that operates helicopters and works directly with Samaritan’s Purse. This partnership was crucial, as it allowed for the delivery of aid to the most isolated communities where access to essential supplies was severely limited due to washed-away roads.
The Journey Ahead
Members of the Saalt team drove to Hickory, NC, to facilitate the distribution of the donated units and extra essential supplies. The journey was lengthened due to perilous road conditions, but the goal remained clear: to hand over the Saalt leakproof panties to local relief groups for airlifting to drop-off points in affected areas. There were plenty of uncertainties along the way, but the Saalt team’s optimism kept them moving forward to help during a time when so many people were suffering.
Empowering Communities
At Saalt, we believe that empowering individuals with knowledge and long-term solutions for menstrual health is key to increasing gender equality and fostering open conversations that break down social stigmas. Access to period care keeps girls in school, helping to break the cycle of poverty for generations. Every consumer who chooses reusable products helps prevent thousands of single-use items from ending up in landfills and oceans and support Saalt’s Impact efforts. 1% of Saalt revenue goes toward impact initiatives including product donations worldwide, education and scholarships, and sustainability initiatives including beach cleanups. We were ecstatic to have the capacity to donate part of the 1% to the people of North Carolina during this challenging time. The desperate need in North Carolina for period and incontinence products is precisely why Saalt's Impact Team and initiatives exist. Saalt is committed to providing sustainable solutions that promote health for both people and the planet.
Community Contributions
Many local North Carolina organizations stepped up to provide essential support. This is how Saalt was able to allocate the leakproof underwear donations along with some additional donations:
