You did it! You finally listened to that voice inside your head and decided to make the switch to a reusable menstrual product. Discs seem like the right option for you, but now how do you find the right disc size for your anatomy? It can seem a bit overwhelming to figure out what size Saalt Menstrual Disc is right for you, so let’s make it simple!
Why consider a menstrual disc?
Before diving into sizes, let’s talk about what led you to make the switch in the first place. For starters, menstrual discs are fantastic tampon alternatives. They can be worn for up to 12 hours, which means you don’t have to worry about frequent changes throughout the day. Other perks of switching to a disc may include:
- Holds more fluid than tampons and some menstrual cups
- Doesn’t rely on a suction like period cups do
- Ideal for IUD users (read more about that here)
- Can last you up to 10 years!
- Auto-dumping capability! What is self-emptying?
- Mess-free period sex
Understanding the basics — cervix height and how it helps to know yours
Cervix height, what does that mean? Everyone is unique, and your cervix is no different! While there are many factors to consider when picking out your reusable menstrual disc, Saalt’s starting point is getting acquainted with your cervix height. Your cervix can change throughout your menstrual cycle, so we recommend measuring your cervix throughout your period. For example, some users may find their cervix starts higher at the beginning of their menstrual cycle, then drops as their period continues. Knowing where your cervix tends to sit is also super helpful information when it comes to inserting your disc.
Now, how do I measure my cervix? You can check out our How to Measure Your Cervix blog here.
Once you’ve got your cervix height, you’re ready to find the perfect period disc match!
Finding the right disc size
Saalt offers two disc sizes: Small and Regular. The Small Disc holds up to 30 ML of blood (4 regular tampons), while the Regular Disc holds up to 50 ML (6 regular tampons). Some users may be able to use both sizes throughout their period, while others may find one size is perfect for their menstrual cycle.
Small Disc Size
The small size is generally recommended for:
- Individuals with a lower cervix
- Teenagers and young adults
- Individuals with a lighter menstrual flow
- Individuals who have struggled with larger insertion products in the past
Regular Disc Size
The regular size is typically recommended for:
- Individuals with medium - high cervix
- Individuals who have given birth vaginally
- Those with a heavier menstrual flow
Tips for choosing your correct size
- Assess your flow: Consider how heavy your flow is. If you usually need to change your tampon or pad every couple of hours, a regular size might be better.
- Check your age and childbirth history: Over 30 or given birth vaginally? The regular size is often more suitable due to changes in your body.
- Pelvic floor strength: If you practice Kegel exercises or know you have strong pelvic floor muscles, you might be comfortable with the small size.
- Try it out: Sometimes, the best way to find your fit is through a bit of trial and error. Don’t be discouraged if you need to try a couple of different sizes or styles before finding your perfect match. How to use your menstrual disc
You have your Saalt Disc now (yay!), now what’s next? The Saalt Disc fits comfortably in your vaginal fornix (aka the wider space around the cervix) and is held in place by its rim.
